Community Service

  • The phyllis klein scholarship award - 2009

The 2009 recipients of the WVQG's Phyllis Klein Scholarship have been selected. This year a total of $2,500 was awarded to teachers, non-profit groups and graduating high school seniors. This generous amount, gained from the proceeds of the raffle quilt made by Guild members, is shard with worthy recipients as a way to share our resources and contribute to our community wile supporting and encouraging the pursuit of quilting and other fiber arts.

This year, the teachers from Washingtonville Middle School, Monroe-Woodbury High School and Goshen Central High School received funds to support their educational sewing and fashion programs. Many of their students learn to sew or knit & crochet by making a variety of service projects (blankets, hats, scarves) that are then given to local community groups that serve our area.

Non-profit organizations that received awards include: the Women in Stitches group at Mt Alverno, Warwick, Project Linus, and WVQG's own Doris Smith, for help in purchasing supplies for the WVQG's service projects (walker bags, Christmas stockings for foster care kids) that she oversees. Of special note this year is our contribution to the 4-H Program at Cornell Cooperative Extension, which will enable them to purchase four new basic sewing machines to accommodate a significant increase in the number of children who are learning how to sew by participating in their program.

Graduating seniors who have been chosen as scholarship recipients include 2 young women from Warwick Valley High School, 1 from Monroe-Woodbury High School, 1 from Minisink Valley High School, and 1 from Vernon Township High School. These young ladies represent the broad geographic area covered by our Guild membership, and together demonstrate that an interest in sewing and fiber arts, both in High School and in life and career, is alive and well in the next generation.
