Helen's Barn Quilt “After enjoying our president’s presentation on barn quilts at our June '08 meeting, I looked at my large white barn and thought how nice it would be to have a quilt design on it,” said Helen. This was the beginning of what is perhaps Sussex County, NJ’s first ever barn quilt. WVQG member Helen Boheim and her 10-year-old granddaughter, Julia Tomlinson chose a patriotic pinwheel to display on that white barn. Helen drafted a 6' by 6' pinwheel in 4 pieces. Then, armed with painters tape and red & blue paint, she and Julia attacked the barn. “We layed out the design and then proceeded to paint the design, 1/4 at a time.” The goal was to finish the design by the 4th of July, and they finished with plenty of time to spare! On June 28th! The result is wonderful and a sight to behold for us all traveling the Sussex County roads!

Another Barn Quilt Trail In New York State: "Old barns become new quilt displays... " The town of Neversink, NY has a Barn Quilt Trail - practically in our own back yard. Apparently this was a 2007 project to "give new purpose to old barns." The quilt blocks are 4x4 or 8x8 and are made on plywood panels then hung on the barns. The article from The Sunday Record (August 12, 2007) was shared at our 8/12/08 guild meeting. Go to the web link to see the Neversink Barn Quilts.
