WELCOME

The WVQG Phylis Klein Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce that a total of $2500 has been awarded to teachers, non-profit groups and students through our 2010 Phyllis Klein Scholarship Awards program. The applications we receive from teachers and non-profit groups are a testament to the many people who are influenced by them, and this year, just over half of the total money awarded went to these teachers and groups. The balance of the scholarships were awarded to four area high school graduates who showed a commitment to the fine and fiber arts in many ways, including through service projects and school or community art projects.

This year’s teacher and non-profit group awardees include: Janice Marsiglio, a Fashion Design teacher at Goshen High School, to help pay for equipment her students will use in classes; Patricia Fontana and Katie MacNaughton, Family and Consumer Science teachers at Washingtonville Middle School, to provide materials their students will use for making pillowcases for children with cancer; Grace Gerard and Fran Callan, from the Monroe-Woodbury Middle and High Schools, whose student clubs make items for worthy causes; the group Women in Stitches of Warwick, which helps residents of Mt. Alverno keep active by knitting for good causes; and Project Linus of Orange & Pike Counties, an organization that makes blankets for needy children.

This year’s student awardees include: S.S. Seward High School graduates Katelyn Faliski and Alexa Pellacani; Goshen High School graduate Lauren Marsiglio; and Alexandra Scott, a graduate of Pearl River High School.

Many thanks to my wonderful committee members: Nancy Brandt, Mary Ann Hogan, Phyllis Teatum, and Betty Wilson, and accidental and honorary member Barbara Winans! Plus, thanks go out to all the members of the Guild for helping to continue this great tradition through their work on the Raffle Quilt.

 July Program

Children's book author, Dalen Keys,  and his wife, quilt designer Mitzie Keys, teamed up to give us a fun and informative presentation at our July program.  Although he's a full-time chemist by profession, Dalen was inspired by his imaginative son, Chase, and Mitzie's passion for quilting to write the book, "Just A Quilt," which is illustrated by Kim Sponaugle.  His humor-infused presentation touched on the process of creating a book, real life experiences that became part of the story, and how he interacted with fabric manufacturers once the book was completed.  He concluded with an inspirational discussion of the creative power within each of us.  Mitzie then presented a trunk show which included her earliest to her most recent quilts. Mitzie's creative journey paralleled many meaningful events in her life.  Her development as a quilter was evident as she learned through trial and error, and as her expertise improved each year.  Mitzie's down-to-earth approach to life and quilting came across as she shared anecdotes about her family and the stories behind the quilts.  She concluded by demonstrating the use of The Strip Tube Ruler™ by Cozy Quilt Designs.  It is the technique used to make Chase's quilt, the beautiful quilt featured in Dalen's book.  Mitzie and Dalen had available to guild members the pattern for "Chase's Quilt," along with copies Dalen's book which he signed upon request.  by Michelle Maggs.
